In May 2011, Andrew traveled to Japan to partner with FAIR in relief and evangelism ministry in the many coastal towns hit hard by the March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. While there, he lived with a missionary family and learned that they lived a very fulfilling life in God's service. While they faced challenges, they were thankful to serve God and see Him work. After returning from Japan, Andrew began to give serious thought to missionary service.
Before meeting Andrew, Tanja was studying towards an MA in Humanities at Trinity Western University. She had in mind the goal of teaching but felt that she would better understand God's purpose for her life once she met her husband. At various times when she considered, "What would I do if I wasn't afraid of what others might think?" she would picture herself telling everyone she could about Jesus.
Andrew met Tanja during his first week of studies at NBS and they were married 11 months later. After graduation, seeking the Lord's guidance, they served alongside church planters in Japan for five months (2015/2016). Through this experience, they learned about opportunities to apply their gifts for God's purposes in Japan. Yielding to the Lord's leading, Andrew and Tanja applied and were accepted as long-term missionaries with Fellowship International to serve in Japan.
Andrew and Tanja have two children. They are eager to return to Japan to be a part of God's redemptive work amongst the Japanese people.
